SAR1 will give you the dimples in the receiver above the mag well which AK purists like to see but really the decision rests on the condition and build quality of individual rifles being comparedeg you could find a SAR1 with the dimples but with canted sights and trigger slap while on the other hand you could find a really nice tight WASRreading years of rifle reports here and seeing lots on my trips to KY leads me to believe the range of build quality in Romo rifles both SARs and WASrs seems to vary greatlyregardsrichard. I think RichardUK said it best. I like my SAR-1, and prefer it over the WASRs that I've seen because: a) the wood is factory finished and b) the dimples give the receiver the true AKM 'look'.

But, I got a good deal on the rifle two and a half years ago. I paid less than the going rate for a new WASR-10 at that time. For a like-new SAR-1. I don't think I'd pay much of a premium for one because the SARs have many of the same QC issues as the rest of the Romanian AKs.

Plus, many still have the crappy Century FCG. WASRs ship with a Tapco G2 trigger unit. I got my SAR's back when they were the low price I wanted to pay. I wanted to shoot it, ugly, cheap, bottom of the barrel rating by the snootier AK crowd & every bit as accurate and functional as the pricier stuff.

I wasn't interested in resale, but I should have bought a crate of them anyway - at today's price, the 400% appreciation beats stocks, securities & even precious metals.Sure, I threaded the muzzles, refinished the wood, installed a windage adjustable rear sight & even did the trigger mod to eliminate any potential slap. I like my dimpled cheapos. As for today's 'cheapo' non-dimpled WASR's - if I wanted the same functional & relatively cheap AK for taking to the range to shoot, I'd not hesitate to get a WASR.I do feed a certain small measure of smugness that my yesterdays' scorned AK is somehow 'better' than the current crop of no-dimple retail market offerings:D. My two SARs never had the slap/cant issues. Paying $250 @ when they first came out doesn't hurt my feelings either. They may not be Polytech Legends, but the wallowed out WASRs I saw (when they first came out) looked like crap. Mag wells still had metal shavings & VERY sharp sides! They look better these days. Seems like Century always rushes out screwed up versions of their latest creation, but then they get better as production continues. 'Polytech Legends'You made my mouth water.

One of my all time biggest dumb collector moves was not buying one of these when they first showed up. I had a connection and could have bought it at COST. Yes I am stupid and I admit it. It still kills me when I think back to that 'fateful' day. I also once missed out on a Chinese Type 56 priced at $400 because the seller was such a jerk that I did not want to give him my money. I would have been better off giving him the money then telling him what it was worth and wished him a nice day. 'Polytech Legends'You made my mouth water.

I bought a Legend when they first came out, cost about $500 IIRC (twice as much as yer avg. Chicom AK back then).

Shot it once or twice then put it up. Got bored with that safequeen & sold it before the 94 AWB- AT COST.Now that there was truly retarded. Cetracer: How easy was it to undertake the changes to give the SAR-1 the AKM specs you spoke of?

I've run across a 2001 model and also bemoaned the lack of threaded muzzle, bayonet lug and and spring plunger. No trigger slap on the stock trigger group, shoots well and has a halfway decent phosphate finish too. I think I'd rather have the muzzle properly threaded if anything.

These are nice post-ban rifles.Certainly the subject has been beat to death but I'd like to hear your take on it, overall cost and level of hassle. Don't feel too bad Tuco.

Of course this was in the 1986-1990 time frame.

Good lord, I wishI knew then what I know now. I would have picked up a pallet full!
